A shared vision to create a one-of-its-kind residential space for future Nalanda learners
For the past decade, Nalanda Academy in Wardha has served as a beacon of hope for students from marginalized communities. Annually, it welcomes over 200 students from 14 to 15 states aspiring to attain quality higher education.
So far, Nalanda Academy has sustained its operations from a single hall within the premises of Samyak Buddha Vihar, Wardha. However, this setup has posed significant challenges.
The absence of hostel and mess facilities forces students into costly rentals, often in unhygienic conditions. Additionally, limited classroom space hampers effective education delivery.
In response to these challenges, there is a shared vision to establish a residential campus. This campus, equipped with dedicated hostels, mess facilities, and ample classrooms, would enable students to focus wholeheartedly on their studies while fostering a sense of community and belonging.
In August 2020, Kanta Humane and Shashikant Humane, parents of our late friend Prof Abhiyan Humane, generously donated 9 acres of land at Waifad, Wardha to Nalanda Academy for the construction of its residential campus.
Once complete by 2028, the Nalanda Academy campus will provide a nurturing environment for over 300 students, featuring modern classrooms, lecture halls, science labs, a library, and sports facilities. Residential buildings for students and staff, a health center, a meditation center, and cultural and arts facilities will further enrich the learning experience, promoting well-being and diverse interests.
Construction on the Nalanda Abhiyan campus began in October 2023 with the building of the campus compound wall. As of March 2024, construction on the academic block is underway.
The first phase of Nalanda Academy campus construction, targeted for completion by October 2025, will include an academic block with four classrooms, a staff room, and an administrative office. Additionally, it will encompass residential and dining facilities for 100 students, staff quarters, and sports facilities.
This initial phase is projected to cost 8 crore rupees.
For over a decade, Nalanda Academy has proudly operated, offering all its facilities, programs, and training to students free of charge, thanks to the support of a large number of committed individuals who believe in the vision of Nalanda.
Now, as we embark on a new chapter – building our own residential campus, we want to remain true to our community-funded roots and hence seek support from all those who believe in the Ambedkarite path of community empowerment through education.
