A Short Critical History of the Last 500 Years: An Online Workshop Series
We are excited to announce the successful completion of our series of online workshops on “A Short Critical History of the Last 500 Years” at Digital Nalanda, led by Prof. Ravikant Kisana.
From February 28 to June 20, 2021, participants engaged in deep discussions about the historical processes that have shaped our modern world. Each workshop offered unique insights into the interconnectedness of history, politics, and society.
Workshop 1 – Origin of the ‘Present’: Middle Ages to Modernity
This workshop traced the evolution from the Middle Ages to the Modern era, examining pivotal moments such as the Renaissance, colonialism, and industrial revolutions. Participants learned how European colonial exploits significantly contributed to wealth and cultural growth, often at the cost of exploitation and genocide in colonized regions.
Workshop 2 – A History of Violence: Rise of Nationalism to Fascism
We explored the historical contexts and economic motivations behind the rise of nationalism, leading to the emergence of fascism. Key discussions included the role of propaganda in shaping political identities and the impact of nationalism on minority exclusion. The workshop recognized the cyclical patterns of violence associated with nationalist ideologies.
Workshop 3 – A History of Violence: World War II to End of Cold War
This session delved into the violent 20th century, exploring how nationalism, fascism, and decolonization movements influenced global dynamics. Participants discussed the paradox of progress and destruction, highlighting how technological advancements often coincided with mass violence and systemic oppression.
Workshop 4 – Critical Historical Review of Indian Nationhood
Focusing on Indian nationhood, this workshop examined the impact of British colonial policies on India’s resources and infrastructure, the evolution of national identity amidst social stratification, and the ideological divides within independence movements. The discussions illuminated the tensions leading to Partition, shaped by religious and political struggles.
As we conclude this series of workshops, we express our gratitude to all participants for their engagement and contributions. The insights gained throughout these discussions are invaluable in understanding the complexities of our past and present.
