Nalanda Academy: Championing Women’s Education

“We shall see better days soon, and our progress will be greatly accelerated if male education is pursued side by side with female education.”

— Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar

At Nalanda Academy, Dr. Ambedkar’s vision of education remains central to our work. We believe that social progress is incomplete unless women from marginalised communities are given equal access to learning, mentorship, confidence, and opportunity.

Since its beginning, Nalanda Academy has worked to ensure that women students are not treated as exceptions in higher education, but as equal participants in building a just and thoughtful society.

A Commitment Built Into Nalanda’s Admissions

From the very beginning, Nalanda Academy has made women’s education a core institutional priority. Nearly 50% of our annual admissions are women students from marginalised backgrounds across India.

This commitment has helped create an inclusive and supportive learning environment where women can prepare for higher education, develop intellectual confidence, and pursue their dreams with dignity.

Women Alumni Carrying the Nalanda Journey Forward

Today, around 500 women alumni trained by Nalanda are continuing their higher education at respected universities in India and abroad.

Many of them come from rural, first-generation, and socially disadvantaged backgrounds, where the path to higher education is often filled with barriers. Their achievements remind us that when students receive the right support, they do not merely succeed individually — they open doors for others.

Education as Confidence, Dignity, and Social Change

For women from marginalised communities, education is never only about degrees. It is also about self-respect, independence, public participation, and the confidence to imagine a different future.

Through mentoring, academic preparation, peer support, and a shared Ambedkarite vision, Nalanda Academy continues to build a space where women students can grow intellectually and contribute meaningfully to society.

Continuing Dr. Ambedkar’s Vision

Nalanda’s work in women’s education is part of a larger commitment to equality and social transformation. By supporting women students from historically excluded communities, we honour Dr. Ambedkar’s belief that education must become a force of liberation for all.

Every student who moves forward carries this vision with her.
