The Curiosity Lecture is an online lecture series by Abhiyan Labs, designed to ignite curiosity in young minds by exploring the fascinating world of scientific knowledge and discovery.

Professor Subodh Patil (Leiden University, The Netherlands) gave a lecture on artificial intelligence, consciousness, and intelligence. He discussed the relationship between these concepts. He also talked about the question of whether we live in a universe determined by physical laws and what consciousness is. He explained that consciousness is an illusion that we all walk around within our minds that makes us think that we are somehow separate from or there is something else happening.

What This Lecture Covers
  • The relationship between artificial intelligence, consciousness and intelligence
  • Whether we live in a deterministic universe and what that means for free will
  • Neuroplasticity and how the brain constantly rewires itself through thought
  • Memory as the output of a highly trained neural network
  • Why Prof. Patil is optimistic about the future of AI and machine consciousness

What Is Intelligence — and Can Machines Have It?

Neuroplasticity, Memory and the Brain as a Neural Network

He also discussed the concept of neuroplasticity and how it is the process of wiring and rewiring connections between neurons. He explained that this is what is happening in our brain while we are thinking. He also discussed the concept of memory and how it is the output of a highly trained neural network. He argued that consciousness is an emergent property of the brain. It is possible that we could create a machine that is conscious, but that it would be very different from human consciousness.

The Future of Artificial Intelligence

He concluded the lecture by saying that he is optimistic about the future of artificial intelligence and consciousness. He believes that we will eventually be able to create machines that are as intelligent as humans, and that this will have a profound impact on our lives.
